Vuyo Mbedu embarked on her career in the automotive industry with ISUZU Motors South Africa, beginning as an Accounts Payable Clerk. In this initial role, she was responsible for managing and processing invoices, handling vendor payments, and ensuring the accuracy of financial records. This foundational experience was instrumental in helping her understand the financial operations within the automotive sector, setting the stage for her subsequent career growth.

Today, Vuyo holds the position of Distribution Administrator for Commercial Vehicles at ISUZU Motors South Africa. In this role, she oversees the distribution and logistics processes, ensuring that trucks are delivered efficiently to dealers and customers. This position has allowed her to apply her financial acumen and organisational skills to streamline operations, significantly improving overall efficiency. Vuyo's transition from financial operations to distribution management exemplifies her adaptability and commitment to leveraging her skills for broader operational success.

Vuyo’s fascination with the dynamic nature of the automotive industry has been a key driver in her career. The opportunity to work with a prestigious company like ISUZU and engage in various aspects of the business has been a major motivating factor. Her strong desire for continuous learning and professional growth has propelled her to excel in every role she has undertaken. Vuyo takes pride in knowing that her contributions, whether in financial management or overseeing distribution logistics, directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of ISUZU's operations.

Breaking through gender barriers

One of the significant challenges Vuyo has faced is navigating gender stereotypes and biases in the historically male-dominated automotive industry. Breaking through these preconceived notions about gender roles required extra effort and resilience.

Vuyo tackled this challenge by consistently demonstrating her expertise and competence. She focused on delivering high-quality work and building a reputation based on performance rather than gender. Additionally, seeking mentors and allies who supported and advocated for her has been crucial in overcoming these obstacles. Her determination and skill have helped her carve out a respected place for herself in the industry.

Balancing professional responsibilities and personal commitments can be particularly challenging in a demanding industry. Vuyo learned to set clear boundaries and prioritise her tasks effectively. Open communication with her manager about her needs and finding flexible work arrangements have been essential in maintaining a healthier work-life balance.

She believes that the automotive industry can become more inclusive and supportive of women through regular diversity and inclusion training. Addressing unconscious biases and fostering a more inclusive workplace culture can promote awareness, reduce bias, and create a more supportive environment for women.

Her top tips for women aspiring to be in the automotive industry?

  • Build a solid educational foundation is crucial. Vuyo advises young women to obtain degrees or certifications in automotive technology, engineering, or related fields.
  • Gain hands-on experience through internships or entry-level positions helps develop practical skills and industry knowledge.
  • Connect with industry professionals and mentors who can provide guidance, support, and networking opportunities is invaluable.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and advancements ensuring competitiveness and informed decision-making.

Believing in one's abilities and achievements, she says, is essential. Vuyo encourages young women not to be deterred by challenges or biases and to pursue their goals with confidence.
